| NOTES | A bull with the face of Achelous, who took the shape of a bull during a fight with Hercules, who proceeded to tear off one of his horns and thus to win the battle. The detail of a black man having anal sex with a white one, is not explained by the art critics, but... It is a convention of antique classical art to portray the female as having lighter skin and the male as having darker skin. Males are more likely to be outdoors and thus having received a good tan. It may also me of significance that the Latin language divides words into male and female areas of attribution. The two tone color arrangement for the sexes is a symbolic sexual language representative of their gender. It is not a coincident that the receiver is of lighter skin. In this way the artist is saying the male has taken the female role. It perhaps, is also evidence that this artist, and maybe by extension that of the dominate levels of society, thought of the receiver as women like; whereas, the giver is still a man. Even today, versatility among gays is hard to imagine among non gays. But before we get to heavy into this interpretation keep in mind that the artist may simple have not been able to overcome the artistic conventions of his day. This may even be a jab at irony or humor.
