NOTES In Persian culture, trees have a symbolic meaning closely linked with the passions of homosexuals. Despite official protests to the contrary, homosexuality is quite prevalent amongst men and women in Muslim countries. Though it is forbidden in Islam, homosexuality flourishes perhaps even more so than in the West because of the rigid separation between men and women in everyday life.
